"So you want a portrait of your favorite animal...?" How about one made of 12 gauge Stainless Steel?
The making of a welding is not an automated process, despite the involvement of powerful machines and computers. I hand-draw and design every element so it will not only capture the animal's features, but also so that it can be welded discreetly from behind (or along its edges) to adjacent parts. This is a bit trickier than it looks, as it involves simultaneously concentrating in 5 or more abstractly perforated layers. Once the drawings are complete, I meticulously edit scans of them, pixel by pixel, so they can be converted into cut paths for a CNC laser that follows them exactly. When the machine shop finally hands me a box of bizarrely shaped parts, it is often with the question, "How do you know how these all fit together?"
Heh-heh...I drew the plans.
